Lotto, or lottery, is a game of chance. The drawing of six numbers from 1 through 49 is completely random. Whether you pick your six numbers at random or follow a pattern—the numbers on your birthday, telephone number, etc.—has no merit whatsoever on the lottery draw. However you choose to pick your numbers, there are only two possible outcomes: (a) you make a match, or (b) you do not make a match. In other words, you have a 50% chance of winning, and a 50% chance of losing.

Winning at lotto/lottery is sheer luck. Your best bet as a lotto/lottery strategy is no other than smart money management. That is, manage your bankroll in order to maximize your wins and minimize your losses.

A game of lotto or lottery does not depend on past history like, say, a game of blackjack. Every single one of the 14-million-plus combinations of six numbers is equally likely in every single lottery draw.

Since every set of six numbers drawn is random, any particular draw is unaffected by the result of previous draws or upcoming draws. It follows that there is equally no merit in following a pattern in choosing the six numbers you want to wager on. In fact, playing the same set of six numbers again and again does not increase your chances at winning—numbers that just got drawn may or may not be drawn again; numbers that have not been drawn in the last thousand draws still may or may not be drawn in another thousand draws.

For your own enjoyment, you might want to avoid six-number combinations that other lotto/lottery players are likely to bet on. This is only because, should that combination win, you will find yourself sharing the jackpot with a host of other people who played the same combination. In this case, that jackpot that began as a huge amount of money may not amount to much in the end.

With a caveat that avoiding these 'likely' combinations does not increase your winning chances in any way, let us take a look at some of them.

The first of the lot would have to be playing someone else's six-number combination—often by playing someone else's lotto ticket—or playing the previous draw's winning six numbers. It's cute, and a lot of people are doing it. But that's the thing: a lot of people are doing it.

People tend to play their birth dates, which, again, seems all cute. And since their are 31 days, at most, in a month, it's likely numbers from 31 below are already played more often that numbers 32 through 49.

Short of having a computer generate six numbers randomly for them, some lotto players would go for a no-brainer combination. A very good example is a combination of numbers in sequence, especially the sequences 1, 2, 3, and 47, 48, 49.

In the same vein as no-brainer combinations, note that the lottery playslip contains rows of numbers in multiples of 5. You can imagine that many lotto players, especially those who bet following visual patterns like horizontal or vertical lines, are likely wagering on multiples of 5 already.

Lastly, some lottery players are known to bet by picking from the six most frequent winning numbers and combining those with picks from the six least frequent winning numbers. It is known as the 'union set' of the most/least frequent winning numbers, and you might want to stay away from that.
